PORTLAND PUBLIC MARKET (Maine)
Despite a record of lackluster sales and evacuating tenants, the Portland Public Market does have one major ingredient going for it: bathrooms. Voted this year’s best, the door-less, green-and-white-tiled loose beat out runner-up facilities at the Fore Street parking garage. It’s true the market’s bathrooms tend to be a more relaxing experience than most and are well-stocked with towels, soap and toilet paper (the women’s even has a baby-changing station). It is also kept virtually spotless by a veritable army of conscientious staff people. Third place went to the generic “Old Port.” We’re not sure if that means indoors or out. When the need to make a pit stop forces you to find relief, think Grapevine
Mills.
The sprawling mall is known not only for its bargains, theaters and food court.
The megamall has roomy, pristine public restrooms that are always well-stocked
with toilet paper and hand towels, readers say.
"It's large, and it's clean," said Cindy Boykin, a Keller resident. "I think
that is so important."
Most readers named Grapevine Mills' restrooms the best in Northeast Tarrant
County. There are 11 sets of restrooms throughout the mall.
"We wanted to make sure we had enough facilities for the customers," said Gene
Condon, the mall's general manager.
The restrooms near the food court feature an oversized family area with spacious
stalls and private sinks. There is a nursing station with couches so mothers can
feed their babies in a private, quiet setting.
Changing tables and industrial-style toilets that are closer to the ground help
make this the complete family pit stop. Soon, the stalls will have small chairs
that fold down so parents with more than one child can change diapers without
worrying that an older child might wander away.

DOWNTOWN
Westlake Mall
After traveling through a labyrinth of corners and stairs within Westlake Mall,
a restroom emerges. There is plenty of stall space in the light lavender room.
The restroom is tidy and well-kept. But it is placed seemingly miles away from
civilization, in the far corners of the mall. It is a time-consuming trek for
those in a time of need. On scale of one to 10, with ten being the best
possible restroom experience, it draws a six.
Nordstrom
Crossing the street into Nordstrom, the restroom choices
expand. Women can choose from three restrooms and men from two.
"The urinals are the size of bathtubs!" said Christopher Kenyon, a freshman
pre-international studies major, upon entering the second story men's restroom.
Fellow freshman Vicente Garcia, a pre-biology major, commented positively on the masculine hunter-green interior.
The experience for women is hardly as enticing. The walls of the second- and fourth-floor restrooms are painted pleasant pastel hues. But there are no trash receptacles and the rest of the decor was unattractive.
The third-floor facilities, however, offered a needed respite from the rest of the world. Visitors are greeted with a comfortable lounge reminiscent of an upscale dentist's office, complete with hanging art and plush chairs. Cleanliness and elegance dominate this restroom, drawing an eight for Nordstrom restrooms as a whole.
Next door is the Bon Marche - the Mecca of all women's restrooms in Seattle. Upon entering the lounge area, the beauty of this restroom is apparent. Rose-hued walls envelop visitors, drawing them inexorably into the high-ceiling powder area. Mirrored walls, dressing-room lights and bathroom stalls the size of walk in closets lend themselves to a feeling of opulence. This restroom gets a perfect ten. The Bon Marche is representative of all that is good in American restrooms.
PIKE PLACE MARKET
This unique and wonderful area of Seattle has two fully equipped public
restrooms. One has similar characteristics to a modern-day industrial-strength
kitchen with stainless steel stalls and toilets. The other is a tiled mosaic of
blue and white, which leaves much to be desired in the cleanliness department.
Combined, they draw a five.
UNIVERSITY DISTRICT AND VICINITY
A whitewashed structure houses the public restrooms of Ravenna Park. Visitors
are overpowered by the black and stainless-steel motif and the stench of urine.
Across the street at Cowen Park, the restrooms are located in a charming pale green building with graffiti-strewn walls and a lemon-fresh scent.
Further down the street at Greenlake, the majority of the restrooms are a cavernous look at the modern wonders of indoor plumbing.
The trend among U-District-area parks is one of unfortunate disregard. They draw a three as a whole. It is advised to BYOTP - Bring Your Own Toilet Paper.
BLIMPIES SUBS AND SALADS
The cheerful awning of Blimpies Subs and Salads brightens University Way. Though
their restrooms are usually meant for customers only, the proprietors are fairly
lenient to the polite and anxious visitor.
"We have the cleanest bathrooms on the Ave.," said employee Kanani Curry, a sophomore pre-architecture major.
The restrooms are clean and white, permeated by the scent of baking bread from the nearby kitchen. Equipped with paper towels and working sinks, they offer a safe haven and draw an eight from an avenue of interesting restrooms.
UNIVERSITY BOOKSTORE
Last but not least on our "tour de toilettes" is the University Bookstore.
Visitors are ensconced in pastel citrus-covered walls and the scent of soap.
Fully equipped with a changing station and roller towels, these restrooms draw a
six.
